Home is where the heart is. Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home. All clichés aside, there’s something special about a home of your very own, even if that home happens to only be roughly 246 square feet. When you live at college, your dorm room is most certainly your home away from home, so it’s important to make it as pleasant as possible. Dorm rooms may be small, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make the most of them!
My roommate and I recently decided we needed a change of scenery in our room. We rounded up some strong boys from down the hall and enlisted them to help us move all of our furniture. We now have what looks like a whole new room. I love the fresh look! So gather up your best Ty Pennington look-a-likes and “move that bus!” It’s time for an Extreme Make-Over: Dorm Edition.
Bedding: Nothing beats the bed. It’s where you go to sleep every night (unless, of course, you’re frequently canoodling with the kid down the hall). Because you spend so much time in your bed, you’re going to want to make it as comfy as possible. Stock up on plenty of pillows, and pick a color scheme to match with your roommate. Definitely invest in a mattress pad. It will add comfort so that you’ll feel just like a princess; you won’t even have to worry about a pesky pea under the mattress. Unless you somehow managed to let leftovers from the dining hall get into your sheets. Gross.
Walls: From the window to the wall, it’s time to decorate it all! Posters, pictures, and paintings all show personal flair. Give that cinderblock some style. You can find posters for just about any interest. There are old movies ones, classic band ones, artwork reproductions, and more. If you’re looking to add some elements of home, print out pictures of your friends and family. A wall of pictures shows off a lot of personality. An even better way to show off your personality is to paint something. Get a canvas and get creative! Even if you’re no Picasso, you still can take pride in displaying your creations.
Bathroom: If you’re lucky enough to live in a suite, then you’re probably going to have your very own bathroom. Make your suite life the sweet life, and decorate it! You can go with all sorts of themes for bathrooms. Find a funky shower curtain and some cute towels to give your bathroom a dose of elegance. Just remember to make sure you keep it clean. You don’t want an evil bathroom scum monster to crawl out of the drain and attack you. A pretty and clean bathroom is a happy (and safe) bathroom.
Storage: Looking to add more space to your room? Storage bins are the simple solution. You don’t need to rent out a garage in order to store all of your stuff. Yes, most dorm rooms are tiny, but you can make the most use of your space with all types of storage bins. There are ones that go under your bed, ones that store clothes, and others that fit in your closet. Putting things in bins leaves so much more room for activities!
Is your dorm a depressing wasteland, or a decorator's dream?
