Overview

The Last of the Mohicans, published in 1826, is a historical novel by James Fenimore Cooper. It is the second book of the Leatherstocking Tales pentalogy and is set in 1757 during the French and Indian War. The novel follows the journey of a group of British colonists led by Major Duncan Heyward as they attempt to reach Fort William Henry. Along the way, they are aided by the frontiersman Natty Bumppo and his two Mohican friends, Chingachgook and Uncas. The Last of the Mohicans explores themes of race, identity, and the clash of cultures. The novel has been adapted to film many times, most recently in 1992 when Daniel Day-Lewis portrayed Hawkeye.
