Elizabeth George Speare’s historical fiction novel The Witch of Blackbird Pond follows the journey of 16-year-old Kit Tyler as she leaves her home in Barbados to live with her only remaining family in colonial New England. Set in 1687, the novel explores the complexities of coming-of-age in Puritan society as Kit struggles to adjust to an unfamiliar and oftentimes superstitious place. Published in 1958, this much beloved Young Adult classic is still popular in American classrooms for its portrayal of how love and acceptance can overcome ignorance and prejudice. The Witch of Blackbird Pond won the Newbery Medal in 1959.
