Is it true? After ten years of false starts and failures, is the phenomenal novel Ender’s Game going to be made into a movie? According to this chair, it started filming February 27th.
We’re both excited and a little worried, especially since it sounds like they’re going to change the story somewhat. But we're hopeful, because not only is the director of X-Men Origins: Wolverine directing and screenwriting the film, they’ve got what looks like a killer cast.
Mazer Rackham will be played by Ben Kingsley, who unfortunately (unlike the character) is neither half-Maori nor from New Zealand. However, when we read the books we didn’t really know what Maoris or New Zealanders looked like, so we just pictured an old, mean guy. And the fact that a Gandhi look-alike is playing the most brilliant general of the future is satisfyingly ironic.
The Dark Wunderkind is going to be portrayed by Asa Butterfield, who has had enough experience in suitably dark movies such as The Boy in the Striped Pajamas to carry this role. Valentine, Ender’s loving sister, will be played by Abigail Breslin, which was a great casting move, and Jimmy Pinchak will play the Worst, Scariest Older Brother in History, Peter Wiggin. Petra Arkanian will be played by rising star Hailee Steinfeld, who did an amazing job in True Grit and seems a perfect fit for the Battle School commander Petra.
But perhaps the most exciting casting move is that sci-fi legend Harrison Ford! Will! Play! Colonel! Hyrum! Graff! GLEEK TIME!
Please, Summit Entertainment. Don’t screw this one up.
