Ear Plug: A New MindHut Series!

By Michael Verity

We get a solid three dozen emails a day from music hacks, flacks, and spinsters, pitching us the latest news on the next big thing. Not everybody makes the grade (nobody needs to hear a singer who combines the bombastic rhythms of Nicki Minaj with the fruity overtones of Willie Nelson) but every now and then we find a band we like. And we will share those bands with you weekly here in Ear Plug.

1776 are a four piece band out of Longview, WA whose tunes we dig. Their hype-sters compare them with classic rock and garage bands like the Rolling Stones and The Seeds, but these guys bring their own brand of swagger to the stage and studio.

Drummer Mitchell Ruppe is positively primal as bashes out the beats while Zach Whitton anchors their low-fi groove with thick globs of booming bass. Nigel Ledgerwood’s voice growls while he and fellow guitarist Chris Cook pilfer massive guitar hooks from the basement and the garage.

Spending time on the underground scene in Portland, OR won them the attention of the Dandy Warhols’ label, Beat The World Record, who’ll be releasing their debut album on June 5th. The Warhols are bringing them along for a nationwide tour, as well.

Click the link below to here for a free download of their cut, “I Won’t Be Your Prey,” and make plans to see them live at one of the venues below.
