During our coverage of last month's C2E2 convention, we mentioned the upcoming series Captain Marvel, which Marvel exec Arune Singh compared to last year's fan-favorite Daredevil. As the book's July 18 release grows closer, we're beginning to believe the hype. Sure, the name alone isn't enough to sell you on the book. Fair enough. New preview art from the comic just dropped, so it's a great time to talk about what makes us so excited for Captain Marvel (and, of course, show you the preview pages—below!).
1) It features a strong female character written by strong (and exciting!) female creator. This happens so rarely in mainstream superhero comics, which are usually written off as a boys' club. Says who? Writer Kelly Sue DeConnick won a lot of fans over with her work on projects like Supergirl, Osborn: Evil Incarcerated and Castle: Deadly Storm (with Brian Michael Bendis). It's always exciting to watch new talent develop, and it isn't hard to imagine DeConnick will be one of Marvel's big names in short order. Wouldn't you like to be able to say "I knew her when?"
2) Catch up with an old favorite. Perhaps you're a fan of Carol Danvers, aka Ms. Marvel, who got to chill on the Avengers for a few years but has kind of dropped out of sight recently. Well, she's back, and this time she's got some cosmic powers on her side. This take on Danvers might really give her the push she needs to take her place in the top tier of Marvel superheroes.
3) The art rocks. Seriously. First, you've got covers by Ed McGuinness which are just like… wow. Then, you've got interior pages from newcomer Dexter Soy that just pop. Look at the coloring on these things! Man.
Are you going to read Captain Marvel?
