The Season Two finale of The Walking Dead was rife with revelations, and left fans with more questions than answers. Who was that mysterious hooded figure who saved Andrea? What’s up with the giant fortress like building we saw right before the end credits? Just how long will ‘Team Rick’ last before someone challenges Rick’s authority? For those Masterminds amongst us who are chomping at the bit for the upcoming season of The Walking Dead—and let’s face it, who isn’t?—we’ve got some exciting news about Season Three.
The first of four new characters was revealed in the Season 2 finale. The mysterious cloaked figure that saved Andrea from becoming zombie chow is in fact Michonne, a samurai-sword-wielding badass with two jawless pet zombies who fans of The Walking Dead graphic novels will immediately recognize. Series creator Robert Kirkman says that the Michonne fans knew from the graphic novels is the same one we’ll see in the show. “The essence of the character—her personality, her motives, everything that makes Michonne Michonne—remains intact from the comics”. (Fun Fact: When the Season 2 finale was being shot, the actress who plays Michonne, Danai Gurira, hadn’t been cast yet so producers used a stand-in.)
The other characters are Harold, a 50-something man who is “studious and fastidious, trying to create a niche for himself in this new world” and Manuel, who’s “a working class survivor, he is confident, physically skilled, a leader when necessary, capable and smart.” Not much is known about these two new characters, but we can tell from the character descriptions alone that these new faces will throw a spanner in the works of Team Rick.
Alongside these new faces will be a change in location. The gang is swapping Hershel’s farm for the gigantic prison we caught a glimpse of at the end of last season. Season Three’s villain is a shady figure known as The Governor, who like Michonne, is a central character taken directly from graphic novels. The Governor will be played by David Morrissey, who is probably best known for his appearance in the Doctor Who special, “The Next Doctor”, one of the last episodes to feature David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor.
Season Three is Darker Than Ever!
The dynamics of Team Rick over the course of Season Two were strained to say the least. Season Three promises to push both the dynamics and the characters within the team to the breaking point. In a behind the scenes interview with AMC, Lauren Cohan who plays Maggie says, “From the beginning, you see completely changed characters”. Things are getting much darker and more intense for our survivors. On just how dark things get this season, Andrew Lincoln (“Rick”) says, “[They] journey into the unknown, taking a huge gamble. But it shows how desperate they are… the pace of it is darker, harder, faster, deeper.”
Season Three will contain some of the hardest challenges yet for our survivors. These characters have been pushed to breaking point time and time again, stuck in an unwinnable, unimaginable situation. That’s part of the show’s appeal—seeing what impossible situations our survivors are placed in, who will survive the longest, who makes it and who doesn’t. As television shows go, The Walking Dead is one of the most intense and well as the most compelling. The fact that the new season ups the ante even more for our beleaguered characters seems like the smartest move yet. As much as Season Two kicked ass, I don’t think anyone wants another season on the farm. Masterminds who just can’t wait for the next dose of wacky zombie fun, Season Two of The Walking Dead is out on Blu-ray August 28th . The Blu-ray set is available as a limited edition zombie head case, designed by MacFarlane Toys. You can also check out the brand new The Walking Dead video game here.
It’s Norman Reedus’s (“Daryl”) comment about the new season that captures our imagination the most. “People start losing their minds, love blossoms, and [there are] a whole lot of gross zombie kills”. Sounds like epic geek awesomeness to us! The Walking Dead Season Three premieres on AMC in late fall.
