IDW Launches New Star Trek: Next Generation Series

IDW Launches New Star Trek: Next Generation Series

By Eric Garneau

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…

No, wait, that's not right. Can we try this again?

Space… the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise…

That's better.

Now, in your head, did you read those lines with a stilted, comedically exaggerated tone (like maybe one you picked up from a dude on Boston Legal), or did your brain-voice take on the characteristics of a noble Scottish actor? If it's the latter, congratulations; you're one of the many Star Trek fans who defaults to the uber-popular Next Generation series when given a choice. In that case, comic book publisher IDW has something for you!

Starting in September to commemorate the show's 25th anniversary (!!), current Trek publisher IDW plans to release their first Next Generation-only comic series in years… and, even better, it's being written by Next Gen TV co-producer Brannon Braga. Even even better, the series features TNG-favorite baddie the Borg, currently causing troubles over in IDW's brilliant Star Trek/Doctor Who crossover.

According to a press release, the plot of the comic, called "Hive," starts after the events of the Next Gen series; in this timeline, the Borg have assimilated the entire galaxy. It's up to Picard and his crew to head back in time and right the wrongs that lead to this apocalypse… if they even can. Take a look at the cover image IDW's leaked for the first issue… besides Picard (in his First Contact uniform) that sure looks like Voyager's Seven of Nine in fancy new Starfleet duds, doesn't it? And that's DEFINITELY Borg bruisers Locutus and the Borg Queen on the left side of the cover. Things do not look too good for humanity.

Rest assured we'll be checking out this comic when it comes out; until then, there's still that lovely Doctor Who crossover...
