MindHut at Comic-Con: IDW Announces My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic Comic
Transformers. GI Joe. Dungeons & Dragons. Magic the Gathering. The joint IDW/Hasbro panel that opened Comic-Con Thursday certainly seemed like a manly affair. But then, somewhere around the halfway point, things took an unexpected turn, as IDW group editor John Barber said that he was finally getting the chance to announce a new IDW property that had never had comics done before. What could it be?
Coming in November of this year, IDW Publishing will unleash upon the comics world My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, based on the runaway hit Hub cartoon series that has attracted legions of not just small children but also, curiously, grown adult men (or "bronies"). We can't wait for the hilarious comic purchasing patterns that will result from this. "Yes, I'll take the latest issue of Punisher, Batman, and Friendship Is Magic please."
To helm the series, IDW's lined up noted webcomic artist Katie Cook (Gronk) to write and relative newcomer Andy Price on pencil duties. Cook assured the panel attendees that Price was "a total bronie" and that the comic would indeed be magical.
While fan questions following the announcement made it clear that this opens up a whole world of amazing jokes ("Will My Little Pony be included in the next Infestation event?" "Can My Little Pony fight GI Joe?"), this will probably be a runaway hit series for IDW. Is your intrepid comics blogger at The MindHut a closet bronie? Probably not... but he may check out the book anyway.
