Starred in: Every Thing You Always Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid to Ask ('72); Sleeper ('73); Annie Hall ('77); Manhattan ('79); Scoop ('06); To Rome with Love ('12)
Directed: All those movies, plus Match Point ('05) and Midnight in Paris ('11)
From the cornball gags of his '70s goofabouts to the cloudy moral quandaries of his Oscar-nominated Match Pointscript, Woody Allen (WoodAl) has been an inspirational voice to several generations of comedians and storytellers. Not all of his 48 directorial projects are necessarily worth watching, and he's especially slowed down on innovation in the last few years—but, hey, all of grandpa's stories about things that used to cost a nickel probably aren't worth listening to, either; those that are, like WoodAl's, are best heard a minimum of twenty or thirty times.
