Ban Zhao (45-116 CE)
History geeks represent! Ban Zhao is considered China's first female historian, after co-authoring the extensive Book of Han. The book even included a treatise on astronomy, a subject in which she was an expert. She also composed poems, essays, travel pieces, and a controversial book advising women to be submissive. Some modern scholars think it was actually a veiled argument for equal gender education, and that she intentionally used the misogynist language of her world to prevent it from being banned.
