In 2010, President Obama gave NASA a budget to land on an asteroid by 2025, and they're sticking to it. The private company Planetary Resources is helping out with the technology, and plan to send robotic emissaries called Arkyds to nearby asteroids within the next two years. Indeed, asteroid mining may be a huge new industry of the 21st Century!
