The nerdy rumor mill’s abuzz with the possibility of Joseph Gordon-Levitt reprising his role as Robin Blake from The Dark Knight Rises for a quick cameo in DC Entertainment’s upcoming Superman reboot, Man of Steel. Granted, if this hearsay even is true, what does this mean? We’d be getting Batman standing alongside Superman as well as, by extension, even more confirmation of a Justice League movie! And speaking of onscreen super hero team-ups, here are five heroic pairings we’d like to see down the line.
5) Green Lantern and Green Arrow
Okay, so Green Arrow is just called “Arrow” on TV these days, but that doesn’t mean DC shouldn’t consider pairing Green Lantern with the emerald archer. Back during their groovy days in the ‘70s, Green Lantern and Green Arrow were good friends and loyal allies, even though the former was a bit more authoritarian than his liberal compatriot. True, the Green Lantern was a stinker in the box office, but it’d be great to see a modern take on the classic duo.
4) Spider-Man and Daredevil
They’re two of Marvel’s most iconic street-level heroes and they practically walk the same beat: New York City. Aside from fighting foes that appear on both their respective rogues galleries (e.g. Electro and Kingpin), Spider-Man and Daredevil are long overdue for a team-up on the big screen since it’s been done countless times in the comics. First, of course, there needs to be a proper Daredevil reboot before this can even happen. Sorry, Ben Affleck, but your performance rendered us just as blind as the hero you portrayed.
3) Swamp Thing and John Constantine
1982’s Swamp Thing flick received lukewarm reviews with the only real praise garnered going to the fact it was an early work of director Wes Craven. 2006‘s Constantine met the same kind of reception. Separate they were okay, together they can be good. But put in the hands of a capable director, like Guillermo del Toro or Tim Burton, who lives and breathes all things macabre and you’d get a masterpiece! Just imagine John Constantine and Swamp Thing combating the hordes of Hell with occult knowledge and the power of nature, respectively.
2) Wolverine and the Hulk
It’s one of the greatest feuds in comic book history. Since their first encounter in 1974‘s The Incredible Hulk #180, time and again Wolverine has clashed with the not so jolly green giant for one reason or another, with the feral mutant showing that size means nothing when you have the agility and adamantium claws to get the job done. It goes without saying that if these two were to be given a movie, it would be nothing but pure, nonstop action—enough to give The Avengers a run for its money... maybe.
1) The Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy
Too soon? With hype building for The Guardians of the Galaxy, it would be prudent of Marvel Studios to combine their highest-grossing with what will most likely be a close second in terms of popularity and profit generation. Already the two teams have met in the animated series on Disney XD and a few months ago in Avengers Assemble #6. Based on Marvel’s track record, these may be subtle hints of what’s to come. After all, the Avengers are going to need all the help they can get when they go toe-to-toe with the universe’s cosmic big bad, Thanos.
