Get some Kleenex, because this love story is a tearjerker. Heloise d'Argenteuil was a precocious writer and scholar of the 12th Century, educated by her uncle Canon Fulbert. Her insightful ideas made her famous across Continental Europe, attracting the attention of Peter Abelard, a renowned French philosopher who is now considered to be among the greatest thinkers of the time. Abelard and Heloise fell deeply in love, but Fulbert disapproved of the affair and attacked the couple, forcing Abelard to be a monk and Heloise to be a nun. Though they never saw each other again, they wrote passionate, intellectual letters to each other that give modern scholars great insights into Medieval life.
