Halley's comet, despite its predictable 76-year orbit, has often inspired apocalyptic rumblings. Camille Flammarion predicted that the comet would slam into Earth during its visit in 1910, and Leland Jensen thought it would get caught in the upper atmosphere during its 1986 pass. In both cases, the comet preferred the open road of space to settling down on Earth.
