Methodist preacher William Miller announced that Christ would make good on the Book of Revelations by returning on April 28th, 1843. He promised that all worthy people would ascend to heaven over the next year and a half, before October 23, 1844. Thousands of his followers anticipated the event, many of whom sold all their worldly possessions. The failed prediction came to be known as the Great Disappointment.
