The Beiwe Festival, Scandinavia

The indigenous Saami people of Scandinavia celebrate the sun goddess Beiwe's trip through the sky on the winter solstice. Beiwe is said to travel in a sleigh made of reindeer bones, heralding the long march toward spring. To celebrate this holiday, put butter on your doorknob: like any fertility goddess worth her salt, Beiwe loves butter. Pictured: a traditional Saami camp.
