Artemisia of Caria, 5th Century BCE
Artemisia I of Caria was a rebellious queen, military strategist, and wartime commander of 5th Century Halicarnassus. She allied herself with the Persian King Xerxes, and basically told him he was being an idiot about his strategy. He scoffed at her suggestions, the Persians suffered heavy defeat at the Battle of Salamis (pictured), even though Artemisia bravely led her fleet into the fray. The historian Herodotus notes that Xerxes was careful to take her advice after that.
