Zenobia, 3rd Century

The great Arab queen Zenobia of Palymra fought alongside her husband against the Romans, and when he was assassinated, she took full control of the military. She expanded her territory into Palestine, Lebanon, Egypt, and Syria, and cut off wheat imports to Rome causing a serious headache for their empire. Beautiful, brilliant, and tough as nails, the sight of Zenobia leading her troops into battle caused both widespread admiration and controversy. She was eventually captured, held in golden chains, and likely executed (though nobody knows for sure). Even so, her still legend lives on.
