Joan of Arc, 1412-1431
What kind of list would this be without the most famous of all female warriors? Born into peasantry, the young Joan began to experience "visits" from saints and angels at around 13-years-old. These visions led her to Chinon, where she recognized the disguised French King and proved her military genius and courage to his advisors. The fight she brought against the invading British was unlike anything they had ever seen: she essentially roundhouse-kicked them out of France in a series of brilliant military campaigns. Humiliated at their losses, the British redoubled their efforts and managed to capture Joan, but only by shooting her through the leg and chasing her down: the girl was not easy to catch. She was executed by the British at only 19-years-old, but her martyrdom secured her legacy as the most well-known female warrior in history.
