It is incredibly challenging to become an astronaut, and it continues to be a tough job once you've got it. But it's also among the coolest jobs in the world. Far from paying to go into space, astronauts are paid to go to space. Plus, many astronauts come back having experienced something called the "Overview Effect," a sense of deep euphoria and connectedness to the world. Now, that's a benefit worth working for.
