How could we leave 2012's best scientific show out of this list? The Curiosity Rover's landing technique was one of the most outrageous and fantastic events to ever occur in reality. During its famous "7 minutes of terror," this mobile laboratory discarded its heat shield, then shot out a supersonic parachute, then engaged retrorockets when it approached the Martian surface, then used a sky crane to lower its precious cargo to the ground. If such a feat of genius and courage doesn't inspire you, check to see if your heart is made of stone.
