Haruki Murakami
Mysterious magical-realism with a dollop of sci-fi thrown in. Yes please! Take 1Q84. It’s a trippy 3-part play on Orwell’s 1984 in which heroine Aomame realizes that she may be living in an increasingly dangerous parallel universe. Turns out, yep! She is! Many find Murakami fragmented and difficult—he very often jumps in and out of separate realities—which is exactly why you should read him. He’ll break you in for the more dense authors you’ll be required to read in college.
