Decades of Flowers
The Lovers: Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe
The Gesture: Tons and tons of flowers. Today, it seems like sports superstars and starlets hook up every second week, but the love between Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe was a huge deal to the public of the 1950s. Though their violent, abusive marriage lasted only nine months, the pair rekindled a friendship in the wake of Monroe's divorce from her third husband Arthur Miller. Heartbroken after her suicide two years later, DiMaggio not only organized and paid for her funeral, he arranged for fresh flowers to be sent to her grave every week for 20 years.
