The Nanotechnological Revolution
Nanotechnology is the fascinating study of material properties on very small scales. Some of the most common elements in nature, such as carbon, behave in radically different ways on the quantum level, and scientists have begun manipulating them to produce revolutionary results. With the development of nanotechnology, computing speeds will be exponentially faster, space travel will be exponentially cheaper, and basic materials can be built from the atom level up. While changes on the commercial level may take a few years, the groundwork is being laid now (check out nanotech "founding father" K. Eric Drexler's upcoming book Radical Abundance for more info on this).
