Gene Therapy

While China approved gene therapy in 2003, this controversial branch of medicine has taken a decade to hit Western markets, and is now expected to be approved this year. Gene therapy allows doctors to literally tinker with our most basic building blocks, such as replacing mutated genes with fully functional ones. It has tremendous potential to help people with genetic diseases or disabilities, from Parkinson's disease to hemophilia. While it's new, complex, and may take time to properly mature, this treatment option represents a major revolution in medicine.
