It's so easy to hate on the sparkly vamps and over-buffed werewolves of Forks, Washington. And there are a lot of comedy groups who have forced a comedy steak through the franchise's heart. But none are as awesome, innovative, or interactive as Rifftrax's new project!
Earlier this week the professional movie-insulters at Rifftrax launched their first ever crowd-funding campaign on Kickstarter. Their goal is to hold a live event in Nashville this August (live-streamed to theatres all around the country) where they make fun of a movie while it plays, something they’ve done several times before. The difference this time is the movie—they want to go after Twilight, which means they need a pile of money to get the rights to screen it. Things got interesting once the Kickstarter went live. The Rifftrax guys set a goal of $50,000 to raise over 30 days—it took less than 90 minutes! As of this writing they are up to $171,000 with 27 days still to go. It seems like finding people who want to pay to see Twilight get insulted is a pretty solid business model!
For those of you not familiar with them, the Rifftrax guys (Bill Corbett, Kevin Murphy, and Mike Nelson) were all part of Mystery Science Theater 3000, a show that ran for 11 seasons on Comedy Central and the Sci-Fi Channel (now Syfy, for some reason). The plot of the show was simple (timeless, really)—a janitor of the future was abducted by a mad scientist and launched into space in a satellite where he is forced to watch terrible old movies so that the scientist can monitor his mind. In order to keep himself from going insane, the janitor builds several robot friends out of junk from the ship so that they can all make fun of the movies together. Just to be clear, everything I’ve just described takes place in the opening theme song of the show. The actual length of an episode mostly consisted of watching a terrible old movie while little silhouettes of the janitor and the robots shouted jokes from the bottom of the screen. It was magic! In fact, it was so magical that even though the show ended 14 years ago, some of the guys from the show have continued to make a good career off this shtick (under the name Rifftrax) by moving from cable television to digital downloads.
But enough history lessons, let’s get to the real reason we are here—making fun of Twilight! Here’s a sample of Rifftrax’s observations, and below are a couple of our favorite quotes:
"Harry Potter is about confronting fears, finding inner strength and doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend." -Robin Browne (frequently attributed to Stephen king)
“The more I read the script, the more I hated this guy [Edward], so that's how I played him, as a manic-depressive who hates himself.” –Robert Pattinson
It’s up to you guys to take it from here. We want you to fill the comment section with your best Twilight jokes, observations, and insults. Let’s crash the site with the pure volume of the ridiculousness of these films!
