Blogging the Vampire Diaries: The Pilot

Blogging the Vampire Diaries: The Pilot

Back in September I put up a post asking Masterminds to help me decide whether I should try watching the CW series Vampire Diaries. There was a good bit of debate, but the majority of people seemed to indicate that it was a fun show and well worth my time. Now it's six months later, I'm going to go ahead and give it a shot and I'd like to bring anyone who's interested along for the ride. It's my plan to blog through the whole series up to date one episode at a time, until I catch up (or give up). Welcome to Blogging the Vampire Diaries—let’s get started!

Season 1: episode 1: Pilot

Let me get this out of the way up front—this show seems right up my alley. I'll usually give anything with Kevin Williams’s name on it a try and I'm generally a pretty big fan of vampire stuff. The reason I never watched a single episode of this show is that it looked SO Twilight from the initial previews (and the timing of the first season). That said, now that I've watched the pilot I can confidently say, that it was indeed very Twilight! In fact, if I've got anything negative to say about the episode it's that it seems super-derivative of other vampire stories out there. That doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing, particularly with ongoing series like this. It can be cool to see a story that starts out in very familiar territory and then takes it in unexpected directions. So I'm certainly not indicting this episode based on all the familiar territory that it treads.

I should also point out that there are also lots of ways that it is way different than Twilight, and that’s a good thing in my book!

I have to say, I was really pleased with this episode and am looking forward to seeing how the series develops. I thought the characters were distinct without being caricatures (I think Bonnie's my favorite at this point, and I want to punch Jeremy in the face a little). I like the setting so far, although I'll be disappointed if they don't flesh it out as part of the ongoing story. The plot was pretty forgetable, if I'm honest, but it doesn't really matter because it’s the pilot episode, so it gets a pass. This episode's job was to introduce characters and set up the premise of the show, and I feel like it did that really well. It also started some mysteries/questions that I imagine will develop as the series goes on, like Stefan and Damon's past and Bonnie's psychic abilities. All in all, I thought it was a solid premiere and I'm eager to see what else is in store for the denizens of Mystic Falls.

Here are a few other random observation that I made during the episode:

Cool vamp-eyes effect. They are creepy/dangerous looking without making the actor look super ugly when he’s in vampire mode.

That walk-around-in-the-daylight ring isn’t joking around! It looks like Stephan's wearing an Easter egg on his hand.

You know you've got a whole season to introduce the characters, right? In the last 44 minutes I met Elaena, Stephan, Jeremy, Damon, Bonnie, Caroline, Matt, Vicki, Tyler, Aunt Jenna, Zach, and Mr. Tanner! I'm gonna need a scorecard to keep track of who is interested in whom.

I'm eager to hear your thoughts in the comments below. I guess I'll ask you to keep them spoiler-free, for the sake of my optimal viewing experience. Also, if there are specific things you'd like me to comment on while I'm blogging this show, let me know below, and I'll see what I can do to accommodate.
