Suzette Haden Elgin
Suzette Haden Elgin is an important voice both for feminist science fiction and scifi linguistics (that's right: there is such a field). Her most notable work is the Native Tongue trilogy, in which she envisions a futuristic world where the 19th Amendment has been repealed, disenfranchising all women. Elgin has the women's resistance movement take refuge in constructed language, rather than war or escape (the two typical routes for oppressed peoples in science fiction). The book's heroines create a new language called "Laadan," which Eldin actually invented! Intended as a counterpoint to the hyper-masculine Klingon language, Laadan is the key to the characters' salvation.
