The Great Pacific Garbage Patch
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, also known as the "Pacific Trash Vortex," is the grossest place in the entire world. About two times the size of Texas, this vortex is by far the world's biggest landfill. It's created by a clockwise gyre of ocean currents, which drags trash from all over the world into this literal wasteland floating between California and Hawaii. 90% of the trash is plastic, which is troubling because it doesn't biodegrade and as you can imagine, causes huge problems for life around this area. More than a million birds and marine animals die per year either consuming or becoming caught in plastic from this heap.
