The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka

A perfectly normal young man wakes up one day to find that, in his sleep, he has transformed into a cockroach. It sounds bizarre, and it pretty much is, but it’s an examination of identity and the idea of people perceiving themselves to be a burden on their own families. This is far from a feel good novel, but it’s really short and really interesting.
