As it has happened for the last decade, the summer movie season this year continued its inexorable march from early May to mid-February. The first movie to hit was Oz: The Great and Powerful. Still, that was only the first of an onslaught of 3-D effects that will have your eyes sore for the entire summer. Here are the ones that you should be waiting in line for.
Iron Man 3
Release Date: May 3
Why You Should Wait in Line: You loved The Avengers. You can’t get enough Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. You’re already waiting in line. Perhaps the most intriguing element of Iron Man 3 is that it reteams Downey with director Shane Black, the man who revived Downey’s career with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
Why You Should Wait for Netflix: You can’t deny the rule of three with comic book movies. Almost all of them take a nosedive with the third installment. Batman Forever, X-Men: The Last Stand, Spider-Man III, Superman III, and Blade: Trinity all stand out for negative reasons.
The Great Gatsby
Release Date: May 10
Why You Should Wait in Line: You loved Moulin Rouge. You loved English class.
Why You Should Wait for Netflix: Moulin Rouge. English class.
Star Trek Into Darkness
Release Date: May 17
Why You Should Wait in Line: Because JJ Abrams reboot gave the series vitality unseen for a decade. The bromance between Kirk and Spock must also be continued. Cumberbatch!
Why You Should Wait for Netflix: Maybe you’re allergic to lens flares.
Only God Forgives
Release Date: May 24
Why You Should Wait in Line: You immediately bought a white satin jacket with a scorpion on the back after watching Drive. Only God Forgives reteams Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Refn Winding for a fairy tale that takes place in the Bangkok criminal underworld.
Why You Should Wait for Netflix: Remember the elevator scene in Drive? Extend that to a whole movie.
Man of Steel
Release Date: June 14
Why You Should Wait in Line: Superman’s back! And it doesn’t look terrible! Despite new Superman Henry Cavill being British, you can practically smell the apple pie from the Americana seeping out of the Man of Steel trailers.
Why You Should Wait for Netflix: Zack Snyder’s last comic book movie was the bungled Watchmen.
World War Z
Release Date: June 21
Why You Should Wait in Line: Zombies take over the world. And we finally see it all. After decades of only focusing on a small section of the zombie apocalypse in movies and television such as The Walking Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Shaun of the Dead, World War Z gives zombies the epic scale they deserve.
Why You Should Wait for Netflix: This was the most tortured production in recent memory.
The Lone Ranger
Release Date: July 3
Why You Should Wait in Line: You can’t get enough of Johnny Depp putting on makeup and acting weird.
Why You Should Wait for Netflix: You were tired of the act after Edward Scissorhands.
Release Date: July 12
Why You Should Wait in Line: Giant monsters. Huge robots. Tokyo. Los Angeles. This is the movie you’ve been waiting for your entire life.
Why You Should Wait for Netflix: There is no reason to wait.
Release Date: July 26
Why You Should Wait in Line: Wolverine takes Tokyo! Unlike the previous Wolverine movie, this one is based on Frank Miller’s limited series, one of the most timeless Wolverine stories there is.
Why You Should Wait for Netflix: X-Men Origins: Wolverine was simply terrible.
Release Date: August 9
Why You Should Wait in Line: District 9, director Neill Blomkamp’s debut, was one of the best sci-fi movies of the last decade and earned an Academy Award nomination. Now he has expanded his theme of class warfare to the entire planet.
Why You Should Wait for Netflix: This looks to be a lot more straight forward and heavy handed with its message than District 9.
Release Date: August 16
Why You Should Wait in Line: In true sequel form, this one ups the ante as Kick-Ass and Red Mist create and join superhero and supervillain teams, respectively.
Why You Should Wait for Netflix: Too. Many. Superhero. Movies.
