Okay, you probably have heard of Tenzing Norgay, but we added him to the list because he's often unfairly overshadowed by his pal Edmund Hillary. Hillary and Norgay were the first people known to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. Nowadays, hundreds of people climb Mount Everest annually, and while the mountain still claims lives, modern mountaineering technology has hugely decreased the dangers of the ascent. But these dangers were all too real in 1953, when this brave pair left base camp to accomplish the impossible. While Hillary is a badass in his own right, we have to give extra points to Norgay for saving him from falling into a crevasse early in the adventure. Without Norgay's cool-headed rescue, Hillary would have met his end in icy darkness, far from the peak he yearned to conquer.
