10 Amazing Explorers You've Never Heard Of

Sylvia Earle

Earle is a modern day Cousteau who has broken several oceanographic records and earned the loving nicknames "Her Deepness" and "the Sturgeon General." At 77 years old, she's still diving to new, dangerous depths because, well, you can take Sylvia Earle out of the ocean but you can't take the ocean out of Sylvia Earle. A trailblazing aquanaut, Earle has spent more than 7,000 hours in deep waters, researching everything from marine biology to the effect of human civilization on the oceans. She is pictured here showing one of her submarine-protected students a coral sample.
