Okay, you guys. I know it's early in the season and there are, like, a kajillion more summer movies to come yet, but we're going to go ahead and say it: Iron Man 3 is the movie of this summer!
Maybe that's a teeny, tiny bit of an exaggeration. There's still Into Darkness and Man of Steel looming on the horizon. But we'll bet you money that IM3 is going to be the summeriest, pop-corniest, grab your cup holder with a death grip like you're riding a roller coaster-iest movie of this summer's bunch. And if it does get better than this, then we are in for a historic summer movie season.
Robert Downey Jr. is back as Tony Stark and this time he's facing off against the terrorist-like bad guy, The Mandarin. Well... not really terrorist-like. He's a terrorist, period. But from the get go, it's obvious that there's more to this story than just a simple "track down the baddy and stop him" kind of thing going on here. There are plot twists and turns (some pretty obvious, some genuinely surprising) that fuel some of the best action scenes we've had the pleasure of viewing in years (the "airplane scene" [90 seconds of which was featured in a TV teaser earlier this year] got a round of applause at our screening... applause!).
Don Cheadle is awesome. Robert Downey Jr. is hilarious and should be in every movie, ever, of all time, ever. Gwyneth Paltrow KICKS MAJOR ASS. Literally.
Also, Ben Kingsley is the man. We're not saying anything else about him or his role. Just... he's the man. Don't! Stop trying to get us to tell you anything else! We won't! Just... you'll see. Kingsley = The Man.
By the end of the movie, there were some pretty major events and changes in many of the character's lives (which we will not spoil here) that had us seriously puzzled about how the next Avengers movie is going to start. They've painted themselves into a bit of a corner, but not so much that it's inescapable. Just enough that it'll be fun to see how they get Tony out of said corner and back into The Avengers.
Oh, and make sure you stick around after the credits. There's a RIDICULOUSLY HILARIOUS tag-on ending that rivals the Avengers in the Diner scene. Classic!
Iron Man 3 opens today, everywhere.
