Perdido Street Station

China Mieville is one of the biggest names today in sci-fi and “weird fiction.” Perdido Street Station is only his second novel, but it really went a long way to showing how great he is. It has elements of steampunk and fantasy, and features a scientist who tries to help restore the wings to a race of aliens who have lost them. Definitely a big read, and not for the squeamish, but excellent!
