Way, way back in 1975 when director Richard Donner was developing what would be the first comic-book related blockbuster franchise, celebrated actor Robert Redford was a favorite to play the role. He definitely had the chops, but Donner wisely fought producers and went on to cast newcomer Christopher Reeve in the role, who to this day is considered by most to be THE definitive Superman.
