The eating disorder known as Pica compels sufferers to desire nonnutritive substances such as wood, paint and dirt and (at least mildly) affects up to thirty percent of young children. It's thought this might be provoked by mineral deficiencies (or perhaps because dirt sautéed lightly in truffle oil is delicious).
