Adwaita was an Aldabra giant tortoise, born sometime around 1750. When he died in 2006 at around 255 years old, he was remembered as the oldest individual land animal on record. This little dude came of age around the same time as the American Revolution—wrap your mind around that! Way back in those early days, he was adopted by Robert Clive of the East India Trading Company. After Clive's death in 1774, he retired to a quiet life in India, outliving several generations of his caretakers. We miss ya, buddy.
