Fully grown lanternsharks are only about 8-inches-long, making them the tiniest and most adorable sharks in the ocean. Talk about diversity within the extant shark family! Whale sharks are 60 times bigger than these cute oceanic nibblers. There are about 45 confirmed species within the lanternshark genus, most of which have evolved stunning bioluminescent displays (thus the name). Pictured here is a velvet belly lanternshark — notice how it sparkles like some kind of Twilight vampire! These radiant displays are used both to confuse predators and to communicate with fellow sharks.
