The makos are the speed demons of the oceans, and the shortfin holds the record as the fastest extant shark. Some scientists think it can reach speeds of 64 miles/hour in short bursts, though the highest confirmed speed is 46 miles/hour. That's one hell of a sprint. This specialized adaptation also allows the mako to perform incredible leaps out of the water, as high as 30 feet! Their acrobatic ability is enabled by their partial warm bloodedness, a trait they share with the great whites and threshers.
