Cerberus

Also known as a "hellhound," this three headed dog was said to stand guard outside of Hades (aka Hell for the ancient Greeks). Its job was to prevent those who had crossed through the river of Styx from escaping back to the realm of the living. Although it is traditionally depicted with three heads, the number was variable, some stories reporting it had as many a one hundred.
