Durians

Hailed as a delicacy throughout Southeast Asia and by daring foodies, the thorn-riddled durian—a.k.a. “the king of fruits”—has maintained a status of notoriety since its discovery. Cracking open the durian’s tough husk reveals the tender flesh inside, said to smell every bit as bad as fecal matter, vomit, or gasoline. Its taste betrays its scent, however, as a few brave souls compared the durian’s flavor and creamy texture to custard (but mileage usually tends to vary).
