15 Classic Novel Endings We Would Change

True Grit by Charles Portis

When it comes to westerns, there are few cooler works than Charles Portis' True Grit. It has been turned into two really excellent movies that define their eras in terms of the genre, and boasts having not one but two masterfully written characters that are DEFINITELY synonymous with the genre. The big bummer about the ending is that Mattie Ross, then grown up, goes to meet Rooster Cogburn again to show her appreciation for what he did for her, and he's dead. That's it. Just missed him. Sigh.
