When the world ends because of unknown catastrophe and just about everyone has either died, given up, or become pure evil, it would be a definite asset to have The Man from The Road watching out for you. His dedication to his young son despite the horrific world he lives in is inspirational, and although the character is never given a name, he is one of the more memorable figures in post-apocalyptic fiction. It also doesn’t hurt that Viggo Mortensen is completely awesome in the film version.
