These Geeky College Courses Are For Real!

These Geeky College Courses Are For Real!

By Robert Punchur

Students are told to study what they love. For geeks, that can be difficult. Course names can be misleading. For example, a chemistry class through the University of Phoenix online offers no information as to what reaction would cause a bird to combust into flames and then rise again from the ashes. Also, no matter how many “night classes” you take, the professor never seems to get to the “good stuff” of swordplay and dragon taming.

There are certain colleges across the country, however, which offer the exact courses that geeks so desperately desire. So for those education-hungry misfits out there, we’ve compiled the ultimately geeky dream curriculum! Of course, since the classes are spread between numerous schools, along with required textbooks you may also need a Batmobile or Delorean to make it in time for roll call…

MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY:

9am-10:30am
Course: LEGO ROBOTICS
Location: (MIT)
Description: Students study and construct working robotic models using Lego building blocks. It is the only course in the country where the TA is a 3-year-old boy.

12:00pm-1:30pm
Course: ZOMBIES IN POPULAR MEDIA
Location: Columbia
Description: Through literature, film, and comics, this course examines society’s ever-changing view of zombies. It begins with the romantic terror of Dr. Frankenstein’s monster and ends with the realization that a modern zombie wouldn’t even bother us; he’d just star in zombie movies.

Related Courses: MEDIA GENRES: ZOMBIES (University of Baltimore)

3:00pm-4:30pm
Course: EXPLORING BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER
Location: Portland State University
Description: The fact that this class still exists a decade after the show ended lets students know just how serious the professor is about it.

Related Courses: THE VAMPIRE IN LITERATURE AND CINEMA (University of Wisconsin-Madison)

TUESDAY, THURSDAY:

10:00am-12:00pm
Course: THE SCIENCE OF HARRY POTTER
Location: Frostburg State University
Description: This class examines the “magic” from popular Harry Potter tricks and explains how they could be recreated by utilizing physics and science. Basically, the only magic left untouched, is the trick where a hipster professor takes all the fun from a childhood series and makes it disappear!

2:00pm-4:00pm
Course: 21st CENTURY SKILLS AND STARCRAFT
Location: University of Florida
Description: Through playing Starcraft, students learn skills such as resource management, decision-making, and pretty girl avoidance. Obviously, this is only offered as an online course.

Related Courses: THE STRATEGY OF STARCRAFT (University of California Berkly), SDCANDINAVIAN FANTASY WORLDS: OLD NORSE SAGAS AND SKYRIM (Rice University)

6:00pm-8:00pm

Location: Queen’s University in Belfast
Description: We know you already have a full schedule, but it’s important to work in at least one physical education class, as well. So try not to complain about waking up early on Saturday for this course… you’ll thank us when startroopers are knocking at your door.
