Do NOT accept Rob Zombies crap-fest of a remake as a substitute; it pales in comparison to this dark and inventive horror classic that has since become the blueprint for American slasher movies. One amazing thing about this film is how deceptive its violence level is. If you don't watch closely, you might think it's far more explicit than it actually is, but most of the hacking, chopping and stabbing take place off camera. and it's just so effectively shot that your mind will fill in the blanks.
