Their cattle herds decimated by the harsh winters of the West, U.S. ranchers during the late 19th century bred domestic cows with American buffalo in the hope that the former’s wild relation would instill the calf with an innate tolerance to colder temperatures. The resultant “beefalo” worked in both theory and practice, their popularity spreading into Canada of all places. Neat history aside, beefalos will always resemble steers juiced up on steroids!
