Science Explains: 6 Common Fantasy Tropes

Fire-breathing Dragons

Having dragons appear in some capacity in fantasy always makes for an excellent hook... which makes us wonder how they even accomplish that in the first place. Theories surrounding the physiology of a dragon’s fire-breathing capabilities have been posited, but a plausible explanation would be internal sacks that each produce combustible gases such as hydrogen and methane, followed by something that quickly generates a spark via friction: Abrasive, sandpaper-like tissue or teeth containing flint and iron, for example.
