At face value the tuatara may not seem remarkable, resembling any other lizard out there. But unlike its scaly brethren, tuataras are prehistoric marvels—having been around since the Early Cretaceous Period (no doubt scurrying around the feet of dinosaurs such as Carnotaurus or Deinonychus). As such, scientists believe the tuatara is the evolutionary key to further understanding ancient diapsids: A group comprising reptiles, dinosaurs, and birds.
